Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles

Una grande mostra monografica che ripercorre la carriera di Chiharu Shiota, abbracciando oltre 25 anni della sua attività creativa, attraverso disegni, fotografie, sculture e le sue monumentali installazioni ambientali e immersive.

CHIHARU SHIOTA è un’artista contemporanea giapponese (nata nel 1972 a Osaka, Giappone; vive e lavora a Berlino dalla metà degli anni ’90). Ha studiato pittura a Kyoto e si è poi orientata verso la performance e l’arte dell’installazione dopo essersi trasferita in Germania.

Shiota è conosciuta soprattutto per le sue vaste installazioni di fili intrecciati, spesso realizzate con filati rossi o neri, che attraversano gli spazi architettonici avvolgendo oggetti quotidiani come chiavi, barche, abiti o valigie.

Le sue opere affrontano questioni esistenziali come l’identità la memoria, l’identità, la presenza e l’assenza, la vita e la morte, e le connessioni umane. Le trame dei fili agiscono come metafore, al tempo stesso fragili e forti, delle relazioni umane e dei legami invisibili tra le persone.

Shiota ha rappresentato il Giappone alla Biennale di Venezia del 2015 con l’acclamata installazione The Key in the Hand, due barche sospese sotto un intreccio di migliaia di fili rossi che sostenevano chiavi donate da persone di tutto il mondo.

Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles è una grande retrospettiva / mostra personale su larga scala dell’artista Chiharu Shiota.

L’esposizione include installazioni immersive, sculture, video di performance, fotografie, disegni e materiali d’archivio.

Il sottotitolo della mostra, The Soul Trembles, si riferisce all’intento di Shiota di evocare emozioni silenziose e senza nome, e di esplorare la “presenza nell’assenza”.

La mostra è stata allestita in diverse sedi nel mondo.

Sarà un’esperienza immersiva che indaga l’intangibile: memorie, visioni oniriche.

Saranno inoltre presenti opere site-specific e nuove creazioni (disegni mai esposti prima) realizzate appositamente per l’edizione di Torino.

Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles

A major monographic exhibition mapping the career of Chiharu Shiota, spanning over 25 years of her creative practice, through drawings, photographs, sculptures, and her monumental environmental and immersive installations.

CHIHARU SHIOTA is a Japanese contemporary artist (born in 1972 in Osaka, Japan; based in Berlin since the mid-1990s). She studied painting in Kyoto, and shifted towards performance and installation art after moving to Germany.

Shiota is best known for her vast thread installations, often made of red or black yarn, which weave through architectural spaces, enveloping everyday objects such as keys, boats, dresses, or suitcases.

Her works address existential questions such as memory, identity, presence and absence, life and death, and human connections. The webs of thread act as metaphors — at once fragile and strong — for human relationships and the invisible bonds between people.

Shiota represented Japan at the 2015 Venice Biennale with the acclaimed installation The Key in the Hand, featuring two boats suspended beneath a canopy of thousands of red threads holding keys donated by people from all over the world.

Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles is a major retrospective and large-scale solo exhibition by the artist Chiharu Shiota.

The exhibition includes immersive installations, sculptures, performance videos, photographs, drawings, and archival materials.

The subtitle of the exhibition, The Soul Trembles, refers to Shiota’s intention to evoke silent, unnamed emotions and to explore “presence in absence.”

The exhibition has been presented in several venues around the world.

It offers an immersive experience that delves into the intangible: memories and dreamlike visions.

There will also be site-specific works and new creations (previously unseen drawings) made especially for the Turin edition.
